Exploring Genomics: A journey in Evomics – Workshop on Genomics 2023

The Workshop on Genomics 2023 was an exciting event that brought together researchers and students from all over the world dedicated to expanding their knowledge in genomics. During two intense weeks, in the city of Český Krumlov (Czech Republic), a variety of topics were explored. During classes, talks and labs, we learned to face the challenges of genomic data analysis, exploring fundamental techniques for our academic journey such as genome assembly, comparative genomics, and population genomics, among many others.

In this edition of the Workshop on Genomics, our group was represented by PhD students Marcela Alvarenga and José Costa, who use genomics to study seasonal coat colour change in weasels and the effects of ancient hybridization in hares.
One of the many faculty lunches in which José and Marcela participated. In this one, we discussed comparative genomics.

Besides the training in bioinformatics, the workshop provided a valuable opportunity for networking between the participants and the faculty. The faculty lunches allowed us to discuss our projects and questions with the speakers in a casual environment. These interactions yielded interesting ideas and suggestions not only from the speakers but also from other participants.

José was the first participant to finish the raccoon hunt.

Additionally, we cannot fail to mention the extra activities organized by the workshop, such as the extra bioinformatics challenges and social events. For example, the workshop bingo, where each square was related to a workshop activity or the city of Český Krumlov, and the raccoon hunt, which consisted of a series of bioinformatic challenges exploring the themes approached during the workshop in a playful manner.

At the end of the Workshop in Genomics 2023, we take with us valuable knowledge and lasting connections. We would like to thank all the participants, speakers, and organizers for making this such a memorable experience.

We hope to meet familiar faces once again at future events so we can continue to explore the fascinating advances in genomics together. The promising future of this field inspires us to move forward with enthusiasm and dedication in the search for answers that can transform the way we understand life in its most intimate form: the genetic code.

Among the many social activities made to endorse the socialisation between participants and the faculty, it was proposed that the participants should organise the end of the workshop party. José and Marcela were part of the organisation. The party allowed for a final opportunity to exchange contacts and say goodbyes.
